Community

Good Moves brings dance to the Atlanta community through the In School and Community Outreach program. It has brought dance to thousands of people in the Atlanta area. It has provided performance workshops to organizations such as the West End Performing Arts Center, as well as curriculum-based artist residency programs at area public schools such as Douglas High School, Manning Oaks Elementary School and Hapeville Elementary School. Several of these workshops have been provided via the Artist in the Schools program of the Fulton Count Arts Council.

In the fall of 2002, Good Moves began its Dance Gatherings program. A Dance Gathering is a program hosted by a school or organization. It is an hour-and-a-half free lecture demonstration and audience participation workshop that introduces its audience to the joy of dance and the possibilities that are available to them in dance. Its main purpose is to provide exposure to the art form of dance and the work, joys and benefits of its study. It is also an opportunity for Good Moves to meet young people in the community who are interested in dance and identify those in need of scholarships to study dance. Schools and organization interested in hosting a Dance Gathering may contact Good Moves via email or phone.

Good Moves creates non-traditional partnerships to bring dance to the community. Beginning in 2001 Good Moves created a partnership with the Inman Park Neighborhood Association to present the Inman Park Dance Festival. The Inman Park Dance Festival is a two day festival of classical and contemporary dance presented as part of the Inman Park Festival and Tour of Homes, which takes place the last weekend in April. The dance festival’s audience continues to grow with the 2003 festival serving over 1,400 individual and employing over 60 artists. The Inman Park Dance Festival has two outstanding characteristics: it is one of the only events providing professional quality, free dance performances and it is a partnership between an arts non-profit and a community non-profit. Since the demise of the Atlanta Arts Festival and other programs, free access to dance performances has been practically eliminated in the Atlanta area. This dance festival has the fortunate position to serve a large audience and to expose many of its audience members to dance for the first time. Atlanta area companies who would like to be considered for participation may contact Good Moves via email or phone.
